The Third Full Weekend in January
Free Fishing Weekend
If ice fishing tournaments aren’t your thing, or you are just testing the waters of this winter activity, visit Phelps on the third full weekend in January. This is Wisconsin’s free ice fishing weekend every year with no license required.
As if these frozen waters don’t present enough fishing opportunities, Phelps is located in Vilas County, which is home to 1300 lakes of all sizes, shapes and possibilities!
Remember to be safe on the ice! Read Ice Safety for safety and tips from the Wisconsin DNR. Always be aware that ice thickness can vary on the same body of water and follow all recommended safety precautions. And watch for fun tournaments.

Ice Fishing Tournaments
Phelps is home to two ice fishing tournaments every year, one each on Big Sand Lake, and North Twin Lake. These tournaments are a fun way to get out on the ice and get to know your fellow fishermen better. Visit our Events Calendar for all of the details!
