Home | Bird Watching

Both amateur and professional birders alike will appreciate the abundance of Northern American bird species here in Northern Wisconsin. The Phelps area is likely most known for the bald eagles that can be spotted soaring over the lakes and forests. But the majestic eagle is just one of nearly 400 species that you can encounter with a bird watching vacation to Phelps.

Grab your camera and binoculars (and mosquito repellent!) and head out on one of the nature trails in the Phelps area. Early spring is the best time of year to spot to biggest variety of species, but any season offers a rewarding birding experience. Fall migration increases your chances of spotting many shyer species, and winter birds are some of the most delightful to watch.

Many of these species can be spotted from your vehicle on the country roads throughout Phelps, particularly the bald eagles and ospreys. Whether your birding trip is done from the car, the boat, or the trail, be sure to bring along your bird identification book because you are sure to spot one that will stump you! Need help identifying that one singing species? There are plenty of online resources to guide you through correct identification. Check out the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology or visit the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to gear up for your trip to Northern Wisconsin!
