10.2 miles connecting Conover and Phelps
Conover-Phelps Trail

This trail connects its two namesake communities along the former Chicago Northwestern railroad bed with 10.2 miles of aggregate (railroad bed portion) and asphalt (last mile heading into the Phelps trailhead). The trail, which goes through the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and Vilas County Forest lands, is ideal for biking and hiking with views of woodlands and wetlands and three water crossings along the way. The western trailhead is the Conover Town Park and the eastern trailhead is located in the Lakefront Pines Park in Phelps.

Great Headwaters Trail, a local organization dedicated to the development of a major family-friendly bike-ped trail system for all of eastern Vilas County, worked hard to complete the Conover-Phelps Trail. The finished product is just one part of the Vilas Country trail system.
